Basic Cactus Care: A Quick Guide

Cacti are known for their low-maintenance nature, making them popular houseplants. However, even these desert dwellers need some basic care to thrive. Here's a quick rundown:

Light:

    • Most cacti love bright, indirect sunlight. Think south-facing windows, but avoid harsh, direct sun that can scorch them.

Watering:

    • Less is more! Overwatering is the main enemy of cacti. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
    • Frequency depends on factors like pot size, light, and season. Generally, water every 1-2 weeks in summer and less often in winter.

Soil:

    • Cacti need well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Commercial cactus mix works well, or you can create your own by mixing regular potting mix with perlite or sand.

Temperature:

    • Most cacti prefer warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid placing them near drafts, vents, or heaters.

Fertilizer:

    • Cacti don't need much fertilizer. Feed them a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer), if at all.

Additional Tips:

    • Repot: Every 2-3 years when the cactus outgrows its pot. Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the root ball.
    • Pests and diseases: Cacti are generally pest-resistant, but watch for mealybugs or scale insects. Treat them with insecticidal soap if needed.
    • Dormancy: Many cacti enter a dormant period in winter with slower growth and less water needed.
